About Suicide

  • In the UK, more people die from suicide than in traffic accidents

  • In Greater London there are typically two suicides every day

  • It is the largest single cause of death for males under 35

  • For every suicide there are thought to be 20 to 30 others who make an attempt

  • Suicide is thought to be higher amongst the socially deprived, the depressed, those with severe illness, and those who are isolated or live alone

  • Most (75%) of those who kill themselves have not been in touch with the mental health services in the previous 12 months; many fear stigma or hospital, especially a psychiatric ward

  • Maytree meets a need: a sanctuary for the suicidal, offering time and space, support and respite.
